Garry mawashi with Kaysuya Sensei

The style we practice is Shito-Ryu Karate which was founded by Kenwa Mabuni. As a beginner this will be the core of your training and as you progress you will gain an understanding of other styles.

Shito-Ryu possesses the kata of both Goju and Shotokan and offers a good balance of 'linear and hard' with 'round and soft'.  Therefore, the three styles are innately connected.  In fact, Mabuni Sensei regularly got together with Funakoshi (Shotokan) and Miyagi (Goju) to work on concepts, techniques and kata.  We honour this age-old tradition and so enjoy training with other styles and clubs and always welcome students from the many forms of martial arts that come into our dojo to train with other like-minded people.

We have a great support network with 8th Dans in Japan, United States and Australia who sit on our grading panels, run seminars and attend our camps.

March 2012

On March 3rd a number of our students competed in the Sunshine Coast Championships hosted by Shihan Wayne MacDonald and the Karate Budokan International.   This was an enjoyable, well run tournament for the first outing of the year.   All our competitors performed well and some medals were won.

On March 18th a number of our Karate-ka took part in Round One of the QLD Australian Martial Arts Championships (AMAC) tournament at Loganholme.  A new tournament for the club with some new categories, with once again a strong showing from our Karate-ka that took part. Results can be found here

Shihan Rod Martin visited the Dojo on March 22nd to train and share some kumite drills and kata knowledge with us.

On March 24th the club held it's Q1 Grading for all Juniors.  Seniors grading took place the following Tuesday - March 27th.  A fine effort from all taking part saw everyone progress.

Another week another Shihan, with Shihan Jason Armstrong paying the Dojo a visit on March 29th.  Shihan taught us some kihon and went through Bassai Dai and it's bunkai.

That wraps up a busy March - Many thanks to the Shihan's and tournament organisers for their efforts.  Tournament details can be found here.

Jan - Feb 2012

Only news for 2012 so far must be the hard work going on in the Dojo.  All the students are getting back into shape after the Christmas holidays and preparing for the first competitions and grading of the year.  Please see the events lined up so far - a busy March ahead.
