Mapleton Dojo Grading - December 3rd 2011

Lois Rowley,  (below on far left) tested succesfully for Shodan last weekend.   Lois had to face a strong grading panel consisting of Shihan Jason Armstrong, Sensei Garry Edwards, Sensei Dave Lewis, Sempai Anthony Wetherspoon & Sensei Greg Scovell.
Lois has been training consistently 3 times a week for 3 years to reach this rank,  whilst over the last year she stepped this up 4 to 5 times a week!   Lois graded strongly and finished the grading with some Continuous Kumite with Sensei Garry.    This was as hard as we would expect.  Well Done and Congratulations to Lois !

Grading Q4 - November 2011

On 26th November 2011 a mixed bunch of junior and senior karate-ka  presented themselves to a large and select panel for grading.  For some it was their very first grading, for others they were grading for Shodan.

I am pleased to say that all those grading were successful and managed to pass and reach their next level.   Below can be seen the august, friendly, helpful but intimidating group of Sensei's that made up the panel.

I am pleased to report that all those grading were successful and passed to reach their next grade.  Congratulations and thanks to all who made it such a great day.    In particular we must congratulate the four junior ex-1st Kyu's who have made the leap to Shodan:

  • Caitlin Edwards,
  • Mikela Jones,
  • Josh Thomas, and
  • Ayden Davis.
They can be seen below in the front rank - (from the right, Ayden, Josh, Mikela and Caitlin) getting ready to rumble !!!!

Finally a group shot of all those who took part.

About Gradings

Gradings are a very important element in a students’ progress. Just like you are rewarded in the work place with promotions or four weeks holidays a year so should students be rewarded by receiving a rank and a coloured belt. The students set a goal and through effort, perseverance and hard work they will achieve their goal. This is where the character development in martial arts takes place.

Gradings are combination of physical skills and endurance, mental endurance and knowledge. When you reach green belt and again at brown belt you will be required to sit a short exam to see if you have an understanding of what karate is about and its history. The pen and the sword or the mind and the body should always be tested together, not just the physical component.

The grading panel will always consist of at least 3 Sensei with guest Sensei being invited as well. The guest Sensei will often be from different dojos and styles and are there to contribute their thoughts on the standard and etiquette of the students testing.
