Match Practice

This idea was all about the children's development in karate. I wanted to find a way where juniors could come together with other students from different dojo’s & styles to develop their karate in a learning and friendly environment. A student development program where their skills could improve in both the traditional and sporting elements of karate.  It had to be affordable as there was going to be one each term. I approached a few sensei that I knew well and introduced myself to another and asked if they would like to get together to do this.  We had the first one and saw immediate results from the students. From that point onwards we have seen the students develop both in character and in their ability as a martial artist. Friendships have been formed and a healthy respect for each other.

The Match Practices have proven to be very successful and have many benefits.

  • The events are for juniors from 6yrs to 16yrs.
  • They perform kata, tan gan ho (a safe form of sparring for all students) and kumite.
  • The cost is $10 whether you go in one or all events. Most do the first two and kumite when their instructor says they are ready.
  • The students compete using the WKF rules. This allows them to learn the rules and prepares them for when they enter the tournament scene.
  • The whole event takes about 3 hours depending on numbers.
  • The sensei from different dojos will put a demonstration on at the end if time permits.
  • The students are critiqued when required in kata, tan gan ho and kumite.
  • The sensei/sempai will assist the students if they need help.
  • For kumite all protective equipment is worn.
  • The sensei and sempai also get to develop their referring and judging skills.
  • The match practices promote good sportsmanship, tenacious attitude & a healthy competitive spirit amongst the students.
  • The students walk away with a positive attitude which makes them more confident as a person.
